Located at the mid section of China's mainland coastline, Zhenhai is lying at the southern flank of Yangtze River Delta, and the Yong River's entrance to the East Sea. Being off-shore to Yong River and China's East Sea, Zhenhai is endued with the fame of “the Gate of East Ningbo Municipality and Zhejiang Province”. Covering an area of 236 sq. km, Zhenhai has a coastline of 21 km long. Under its jurisdiction, there are 2 townships and 4 sub-districts.

In recent years, Zhenhai is making a full play of its advantages and promoting its development of off-shore and urban economy while pushing forward the optimization of industrial structure and the transformation of economic increase modes and patterns. At present, Zhenhai has Ningbo Chemical Industry Zone, Zhenhai Economic Development Zone as its foundation of economic development and has basically formed its major industry line with the industry features of petrochemistry, machinery, and electronics. In 2009 the value of Zhenhai's total gross domestic product reached 19.3 billion RMB Yuan. The financial budgetary revenue reached 4.2 billion RMB Yuan the import and export value of 2009 reached 3.8 billion USD.The disposable income for urban and rural residents reached 27368 RMB Yuan and 13463 RMB Yuan respectively.
Looking into the future, Zhenhai is in an unswerving step to deeply implement the strategy of further developing Ningbo’s major areas and to promote "Five-Large-Project, namely industrial upgrading, urban progress, cultural development, ecological Zhenhai, harmonious society" and build "Four-Bases, namely petrochemistry and machinery and electronics, off-shore logistics, higher-education and scientific research, recreational tour" so as to build a harmonious society of higher standard and basically realize the modernization drive ahead of schedule .

Ningbo Chemical Industry Zone (NCIZ) is a specialized chemical industry zone that is built upon the approval from the People’s Government of Zhejiang Province. The zone lies in the south of Yangtze Delta and northeast of Ningbo and is 24 kilometers far from Beilun port, namely the famous deep-water port in China.The biggest liquid chemical industry jetty in China is located inside the zone. NCIZ is an important petrochemical industry base as well as chemical new materials base and new industrialization demonstration base approved by state government.
The total planned area of the zone is 56.22 square kilometers with 7.7 Square kilometers developed. In accordance with the development requirements of “Export-oriented, high-starting point and cross century” and “Continuous, rapid, safe and healthy”, the zone is now focusing on the development with 20 million t/a refinery project and 1 million t/a ethylene project of Sinopec ZRCC as the leading industry, relying on liquid chemicals Jetty, taking alkene and aromatics as the main raw material to develop petrochemical industry with the three major synthetic materials, basic chemical industry materials and further processing as the characteristics. The zone is making effort to develop a petrochemical industry zone and new chemical materials industry zone with relatively centralized high-tech industry and mainstay industry as well as sustainable development of balance between production and ecology.

Zhenhai Economic Ddevelopment Zone
Zhenhai Economic Development Zone is a provincial-level economic development zone founded in 1992 with approval from Zhejiang Provincial Government. Stipulated by National Development and Reform Commission, Zhenhai Economic Development Zone’s initial development area is 9.22 sq. km of which 8.8 sq km up to now has been developed. Endowed with advantages of superior location, unique function and rich resources, Zhenhai Economic Development Zone comprises four industry blocks of Precision Machinery Industry Park, High-tech Industry Park (Nordic Industrial Park), Fine Chemicals industry Park and Storage & Logistics Park. In 2006, Zhenhai Economic Development Zone and Jiaochuan Sub-district have been united. After its unification and through several years of operation, the win-win achievements due to integrated functions and resources co-sharing have been achieved.
After more than ten years of arduous efforts, Zhenhai Economic Development Zone has been developed into a full-functioned harmonious development zone with its own characteristics. Among all provincial-level development zones in Zhejiang province, Zhenhai Economic Development Zone has taken leading roles for many times in appraisals through competition. By the end of 2008, Zhenhai Economic Development Zone has accumulative total contractual foreign capital value of 1262.7 million USD and the accumulative total realized foreign capital value amounted to 725.94 million USD. The industry sales volume in 2008 reached 17.1 billion RMB Yuan. Zhenhai Economic Development Zone now has become Zhenhai district’s major foundation for foreign investment attraction and regional economy increase as well.
